The smart national identity (NID) card has 25 security features. So, it is expected that this will put an end to forgery. The smart NID cards were produced in France and later data were stored in the cards in Bangladesh, said Brig Gen Sultanuzzaman Md Saleh Uddin, director general at the EC’s NID Registration Wing. The machine-readable card have 32 types of basic information of a citizen embedded in its microchip. Currently, NID card is required for at least 22 types of services. The services include passport, banking, driving license, trade license and share trading. In future, it would be required for getting many more services.
How to get NID Smart Card Bangladesh
The schedules and names of card distribution centres are announced through newspaper advertisements and community-based campaigns, like announcements in mosques.
Voters, who are yet to have an NID card, will have to go to the distribution centres with their voter registration slip. Those who have lost their existing cards must contact their respective upazila or thana election offices with the main copy of a general diary which was filed with the police station concerned. It costs the EC around $1.6 to produce a smart NID card. Yet, it would be delivered to citizens free of cost.
Firstly, the cards will be valid for 10 years.
Currently, there are over 10 crore voters in Bangladesh. Of them, nine crore will get smart cards by 2018 under an ongoing project. The rest of the voters would get cards under a new project which would be launched soon. Citizens’ data are safe from unauthorized access as the database servers are “fully protected”.

Smart NID Card Requirements:
Voter card is essential for eligible citizens. This gives them right to chose eligible representative. This card is needed for many purposes. Voter list is a continuous process under election commission. Bangladeshi citizen who have frequently lived in an area and are 18 or above before 1 January 2017 may get voter ID by submitting the following docs:
- SSC or equivalent certificate
- Birth certificate
- Father, Mother, Husband/ Wife’s NID bd photo copy.
- Passport/ Driving license / TIN certificate
- Utility bill copy/ House rent receipt/ Holding tax receipt (as a proof of address)
- Citizenship certificate ( as applicable).

Smart NID card Collection mobile sms Process
Bangladeshi Citizens can get Smart card by sending an SMS to 105 from any mobile phone.For sending an SMS to 105, one has to go to the message option of his phone,
Type “SC”, leave a space, type “NID”, again leave a space and type the 17-digit NID card number.
Those who have 13-digit number will have to add their year of birth before the number to make it a 17-digit one.
NID Smart Card Bangladesh Collection & Distribution Schedule
District level Smart National ID card (Smart NID) distribution began on 01 Dec, 2017. The programme began with Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda inaugurating through video conference from the Election Commission Headquarters at Dhaka’s Agargaon. In the first phase, the Smart NID distribution programme will be implemented in 27 districts. In the programme, Election commissioners Mahbub Talukder, Rafiqul Islam, Kabita Khanam and Brigadier General (Retd) Shahdat Hossain Chowdhury, Acting Secretary of the Election Commission (EC) Secretariat Helaluddin Ahmed, Director General of the NID Registration Wing of the EC Mohammad Saidul Islam and senior officials of the EC were also present among others.
The Smart NIDs will be distributed at Tungipara in Gopalganj, Patuakhali Sadar, Jhalakathi Sadar, Borguna Sadar, Meherpur Sadar, Bagerhat Sadar, Narail Sadar, Habiganj Sadar, Sunamganj Sadar, Bogra Sadar, Joypurhat Sadar, Pabna Sadar, Netrakona Sadar, Sharitpur Sadar, Rangamati Sadar, Bandarban Sadar, Khaghrachari Sadar, Cox’s Bazar Sadar, Pirojpur Sadar, Kurigram Sadar, Lalmonirhat Sadar, Panchagar Sadar, Gaibandha Sadar, Nilphamari Sadar, Dinajpur Sadar, Thakurgaon Sadar and Noakhali Sadar.
